The hidden reasons, the invisible elements that give tradition its “Why” and shape our environment, are what make traditions authentic. It’s not solely about the use of local materials or innovative construction techniques. Rather, it encompasses a broader perspective that includes environmental impact, community engagement, and the intangible aspects like beliefs and wisdom, beyond mere aesthetics..
Ubuntu, a philosophy that emphasizes community, interconnectedness, and mutual respect, could be the answer to how we inhabit this continent, this circular life we share in Africa. After a year of exploring these ideas, I’ve begun to understand why Africans have such a different perception of time—a perspective that can only be fully grasped through lived experience.

As an architect and urban planner working today in Senegal, I ask myself crucial questions about the future of our spaces and communities. How can we integrate these concepts of collectivity, well-being, and respect for traditions while addressing contemporary challenges? How can African architecture, with its rich symbolism and attention to detail, teach us to create spaces where both the individual and the community thrive in harmony?
When it’s comme to Architecture, I prefere words comming from the natives them self. Ostin Okinowo a young Nigerian architect, talke about African values, for excemple : why you must hide the kitchen when you build for Africain community? as an architect she discribe African architecture as a guardian of our humanity.
Demás Nwoko, who prioritizes symbolic details to engage Africans in both public and private spaces, emphasizes the importance of cultural narratives and aesthetics in his work.
Their remarkable work serves as a poignant reminder that African architecture transcends mere aesthetic form and function, always considering the needs and values of the community with profound respect and understanding. Techniques such as the intricate use of Aso-Oke fabric or the innovative Makuba, which effectively waterproofs buildings, reveal how African design consistently seeks to connect us to a shared sense of belonging and cultural identity. This approach not only honors tradition but also fosters a deep appreciation for the environment and community.
